iPad 2 inventory in Taiwan could be cleaned out in a day: retailers

Apple Inc.’s iPad 2 tablet computer, which officially went on sale in Taiwan Friday, may sell out within a day based on the limited inventory of the device in Taiwan and strong demand, local chain retailers said Friday.

Apple’s main distributors in Taiwan — Studio A, DataExpress Infotech Co. and Tsann Kuen Enterprise Co. — began selling the popular gadget Friday at 11 a.m. and opened their doors to long lines of customers hoping to get their hands on it.

At one of Tsann Kuen’s Taipei stores, about 200 people were lined up an hour before it opened, waiting to buy Apple’s next-generation tablet PC that was first launched in the United States in March this year.

Those consumers were likely to be able to take an iPad2 Case home, said Tsann Kuen Vice President Steven Yen, but he believed the device would be completely sold out in a short period of time.

Local media has reported that Apple shipped 15,000 iPad 2′s to Taiwan in its first consignment of the product to the island, not enough to satisfy anticipated demand at local stores.

“We have 5,500 units of the iPad 2 in our 30 stores around the country, which is supposed to be the most among all retailers, ” Yen said.

“But we are still likely to run out of inventory in one day due to strong demand. In that case, consumers who want to buy the iPad 2 may have to wait until early June.”

Edward Liao, a spokesman for DataExpress, agreed with Yen’s assessment, though he would not disclose how many iPad 2 Covers were available in the company’s eight chain stores.

Liao said demand was particularly strong because the product’s launch date in Taiwan was close to its March launch in the United States, resulting in consumers being willing to wait to buy the official version rather than opting for a parallel import.

Taiwan was part of the fourth wave of the iPad 2′s global release. It was first released in the United States on March 11, in Europe on March 25 and then in major Asian markets such as Hong Kong, South Korea, Singapore and China in late April.

According to Reuters, Apple’s iPad 2 Smart Cover sold 1 million units on its launch weekend in the U.S., reaching the milestone 10 times as quickly as the iPad 1.

Market analysts have estimated sales of the popular gadget this year at around 35 million to 40 million units, taking 70 percent of the worldwide tablet PC market.
